Mensa is an international society made up of persons who score at or above the 98th percentile on any one of a number of standardized intelligence tests. Mensa is dedicated to identifying and fostering human intelligence for the benefit of humanity, encouraging research into the nature, characteristics and uses of intelligence, and providing a stimulating intellectual and social environment for its members. Mensa provides individuals an opportunity to meet other intelligent people at the local, regional and national levels. Mensa has over 100,000 members worldwide and chapters in more than 40 different countries.
American Mensa is organized into geographic regions, with Region 5 covering most of the Southeastern United States. Region 5 comprises 20 affiliate groups in Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. Piedmont Area Mensa, with just over 200 members, serves the upstate of South Carolina, including Anderson, Clemson, Gaffney, Greenville, Greenwood, Laurens, Spartanburg and surrounding communities, as depicted in the map at left.
The purpose of Piedmont Area Mensa is to promote a positive, welcoming Mensa presence in the Upstate, to engage in activities that utilize intelligence for the benefit of our community, and to provide a stimulating social and intellectual environment for members, guests and visitors.
Piedmont Area Mensa participates in the annual scholarship program of American Mensa, Ltd., awarding scholarships locally each year based on the results of a student essay competition. Furthering its commitment to the Upstate community, PAM provides member volunteers for numerous local events. Proceeds from our fundraising activities are used to support PAM's scholarships and other programs. PAM also supports the Mensa Educational & Research Foundation and other activities of American Mensa and Mensa International.
Membership in Mensa is available to anyone who achieves a qualifying score on the Mensa Admissions Test or who submits acceptable documentation of a qualifying score on a standardized intelligence test (known as prior evidence).
